How to Get That Raise

Don’t take “no” for an answer

This sketch reminds me of the time many years ago when I was denied a pay raise and promotion that I believed I earned.

Immediately after learning the company would not give me the raise and promotion, I built an animated PowerPoint slide presentation showing how my sales performance led the company and that my smart and hard efforts were about to generate even more $millions of business.

The presentation was data-driven, but also had a humorous “But wait, there’s more!” attitude because I wanted it to reflect my voice had I made my case in person.

I emailed it to the vice president who passed me over, asking him to take a few minutes to watch it.

He watched, and then within a day or two promoted me and gave me an even bigger pay raise than I asked for.

Lesson Learned: If you earned it, then ask for it.
